American Ballet Theatre will perform the Russian classic "La Bayadère" at the Met this May
May 15 - May 21 The second act of La Bayadère, “The Kingdom of the Shades,” famously begins with twenty-four ballerinas, dressed in gossamer white tutus, descending from steep ramps, one after another, and filing across the stage in a long series of arabesques. Sublime as angels, they appear to have arrived from heaven. Incredible work goes into achieving this spectacular effect. Not only do the ballerinas need enormous technical ability to hold their positions over such a long period of time, but they also must be able to focus intently to dance so perfectly in unison. So great are the demands on them, in fact, that no one is allowed in the stage wings at the Metropolitan Opera House while the scene unfolds. Few ballets offer such breathtaking choreography and so many opportunities to show off brilliant pointe technique within a theatrical context. Created by the famous Russian choreographer Marius Petipa in 1877 for the Imperial Russian Ballet and performed to a melodious score by the Bolshoi Theatre composer Ludwig Minkus, La Bayadère offers tour de force performances by ABT’s roster of world-class dancers as the tale’s doomed temple dancer, the warrior who betrays her, and her archrival. Set in mystical India, this classic jewel was adapted for American Ballet Theatre by the esteemed Natalia Makarova, and it has been an audience favorite ever since. Opening May 15 for eight performances only, order tickets now for the glorious epic of La Bayadère.
