Madhavi Mudgal Odissi: PRAVAHA Choreography: Madhavi Mudgal Madhavi Mudgal epitomizes the elegance and sophistication of the lyrical dance form known as Odissi, which originated in the ancient temple dances of northern India. Her command over the purely ornamental aspect of Odissi is striking, with her delicate postures and strong rhythmic footwork coming together in an appealing flow of sculpturesque movements. The subtle expressions, musical knowledge and aesthetic sense that Madhavi Mudgal brings to each performance add to the highly distinctive character of her recitals. Evidence, A Dance Company Artistic Director: Ronald K. Brown Upside Down Choreography: Ronald K. Brown Music: Oumou Sangare and Fela Kuti Founded in 1985, Evidence's focus on the seamless fusion of traditional African dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word provides a unique view of human struggles, tragedies and triumphs. Ronald K. Brown's choreography reacquaints the audiences with the beauty of traditional movement and rhythms, and provides a new method of dance communication. Upside Down is an excerpt from the evening-length work, Destiny, created in 1998 in collaboration with Rokiya Kone of the Ivory Coast and her company, Jeune Ballet d'Afrique. Focused on the idea that corruption, outside forces and lack of consciousness result in everything being "upside down," the power, energy and African sensibility of the work reflect the intensity behind the company's vision. Backhausdance Artistic Director: Jennifer Backhaus eXit Choreography: Jennifer Backhaus Music: Erik Lekrone Orange County's Backhausdance celebrates modern themes through athletic yet lyrical contemporary movement. The company is a unique mix of beautifully trained, physically powerful dancers who create riveting performances full of passion, physical beauty, and a breathtaking execution of movement. eXit, an athletic trio, explores the relationship of three dancers as they interact with each other and their environment. The integration of a live percussionist on stage creates tension and builds intensity as the three dancers are propelled through boxes of light, desperately attempting to find a way out. Pacifico Dance Company Artistic Director: Adriana Astorga-Gainey ¡Ajumala Calentano! Choreography: Adriana Astorga-Gainey Music: Traditional Pacífico Dance Company is dedicated to the preservation and reconstruction of Mexican dance, as well as developing original and innovative choreographies that test the boundaries of folk dance. ¡Ajumala Calentano! is a grouping of four dances that reflect the cultural fusion and tropical surroundings of Guerrero, Mexico. Danza de Diablos was originally performed to honor Dios Ruja who was to liberate the people from the harsh conditions of colonial slavery and later was used to honor the saints and the dead. Las amarillas, El son del diablo and La iguana show the influences of nature using the rhythms and music of South America and Africa.
